How to make it (slightly) easier to swallow pills

I’ve never been good at swallowing pills. When I do, I need lots of water and I throw my head back and forward in a graceless hideous spasm of multiple failed attempts. If someone is looking at me, it gets even more difficult. I’ve gotten a bit better at it through years of practice, but I still don’t like it.

I learned recently that I find it a bit easier to swallow pills if I use fizzy water (carbonated water) like Bubly, La Croix, or from something like a Soda Stream, as in my case.

If you’re like me and struggle a bit when swallowing pills, try fizzy water.

  1. Oliver shares your pill-swallowing issue, and we’ve found that, at least for prescription meds, it’s generally possibly to have what otherwise would be provided in pill form provided in liquid form. At least at Murphy’s Parkdale Pharmacy.

    1. Sometimes there are smaller pills too (or pills that can be broken in half). I was advised by my doctor to take Omega-3 which came in giant horse-sized capsules. I was able to find smaller capsules (4 smaller caps are much easier than 2 giant caps).

  2. You should figure out if your pill floats or sinks in water. This is what determines if you should tilt your head down or back. If the pill sinks, then pill + mouthful of water, then tilt your head back and wait a couple seconds for the pill to sink towards your throat. Then swallow. Opposite if the pill floats.
