I noticed, while gassing up this morning, that the new A&W on Univ Ave. is open for business! I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had A&W…Dude #2:
Maybe we should eat there for lunch today…. there was a line up yesterday.(time passes…)
Dude #3:
Let’s never do that again.Dude #1:
I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’ll be a long time before I eat A&W again…Dude #2:
I feel gross.
whats an A&W??? We’re not from london you know!
London? They live in Canada. That aside, A&W (a rootbeer company) has a restaurant chain. I’m from Seattle, WA (now I live in New Jersey–they don’t have A&W here yet), and back in day most A&W places used to be like old drive-ins. I don’t know if that’s the case now, though. They sell the usual–burgers, fries, rootbeer floats.
I only ate at one once, and had a very similar response as the one you posted.
Sorry paddy, I mistakenly assumed that A&W fast food chain was international. Garrett has done a good job of explaining it though. And yes, we are in Canada.
The root beer is pretty good. Not much else though.
The root beer was funny as well – a bit bland. Like they did not get the syrup to soda mix right.
Did the root beer come in frosty glass mugs? I remember when I was a kid we used to get it like that. Best-Root-Beer-Ever.

Things missing in London:
Things not missing in London:
Nick: Yes, frosted mugs are back which makes up for much. And baby burgers which were my mainstay when 7.
My lone strange A&W experience took place in Sydney NS (not sure if that had anything to do woth it though).
A&W mysteriously started to get alot more business after the KFC across the street exploded…coincidence…maybe not, but it really did exploode!
PS. Be sure to check out the
evolvement of the A&W logo
Sorry lads – i realise that this site is canadian. The “We’re not from london you know!” was a quote from a film (withnail and I). They dont have A&W in london though as far as i could see the last time i was there, and neither do they have them in ireland where i am from.
I have never had or seen root beer – what does it taste like? Is it anything like ginger ale? Ive had canada dry – is this something similar?
Here’s a recipe for root beer. It’s kind of hard to describe the taste. Kind of a caramely cola… Delicious.
Speaking of A&W, if you go to this article you can read about how a Prince Edward Islander named Steven Garrity has started an Internet petition to expose his love for the television series Northern Exposure and demand for its release on DVD.
This sort of thing passes for news? If so, then I’ve got a hot tip for the people at CBC Charlottetown about an Islander named Jeff Coll who is exposing his love for Suddenly Susan with a fansite on Geocities. His site counter shows a little over 500 hits, which outnumbers the amount of “signatures” on Garrity’s petition greatly. Surely the General Public must know!
And did Garrity misspell allusions in an e-mail to the author of the article, or is the author just an idiot? Clearly, the author is an idiot if this article is what he or she thinks is newsworthy.
Ba dum ba dum..dum ba dum ba dum dum..ba dum ba dum..ba dum..ba dum dum..
Mmmm, 30 degrees in Halifax right now, I could go for a cold root beer in one of those 30 pound glass mugs!
Jeff Coll: I did not misspell “allusions” in my email. It was a taped interview I said “allusions”. It was an unfortunate mistake, but I’m sure it was just an innocent transcription mistake.
Further thoughts can be found in my new post about the radio coverage.
In my younger years, my parents would always stop at an A&W on road trips. You’d get your food delivered on trays that hung on your car window. The big heavy mugs always made the rootbeer special.
But alas, yesterdays adventure had none of the charm, or taste that I remember. Hopefully it was a result of cooking gear not quite set up right, and inexperienced staff…
I remember when I was younger and Charlottetown’s A&W was located on the University/Belvedere avenue corner (now a Subway) The service was slow and the food was not that great that I can remember. About 4 years ago while in Halifax I came across an A&W in the food court of a Spring Garden mall. I ordered up a grandpa burger combo, and loved it!
I recommend to any one who is planning on visiting our new A&W restaurant in Charlottetown to wait another week or two. The staff started training from scratch on the 27th of June and opened on the 2nd of July. I’d say the wait of a week or two would give the staff plenty of time to adjust to their new jobs and get things right.
Andrew is absolutely correct. The A&W in the Spring Garden mall is amazing! Possibly the best Papa Burger, if not the best burger, I’ve ever eaten.
I still have a frosted mug from when the A&W was on the Island.
We have a couple of the family frosted mugs here as well, baby and mamma I think they are. Also, the A&W in the Champlain Mall in Moncton is also very good, I ate there on my last can pop/beer run.
Lets hope our new A&W works out the problems and is good as said A&Ws.
Very humurous. The only thing worse, I think, is Jack in the Box, who just blatently attempts from time to time to kill off it’s loyal patrons with e-coli. Would be funny, except for a rash of kids that died a few years back from their burgers in the northwest.
By the way, here in my hood, we are (er…were) eagerly awaiting an A & W grand opening…you know, it had been so long…now you have ruined it for us.
I’ve never eaten at a Jack in the Box and I probably never will, but I remember their hilarious TV ads from a Cannes advertising awards screening.
Make sure you go a hour before you want to eat.. every time i drove by, the drive thru has been backed to the road and the line up in for inside was lined all the way out the front door..
Is it really worth the wait?
It’s so not worth the wait.
It may not be worth the wait but it is now news.
This continues the cross-thread topic about what not news is news on PEI.
On a petty note, according to that article, the name of the VP of A&P is ‘Graham Cooke’. Hehe.
…makes me think of Earle Camembert on SCTV…
I had A&W the other day after waiting 45 minutes, it was worth it. I had nothing better to do and I was hungry so I put the 2 together and went to A&W.
Their food seems to be almost on par with A&W in the Spring Garden mall in Halifax.
I really love A&W, although last time i went the burger wasnt the greatest, but other than that it was really good. i really love the frosted rootbeer in the mug and their delicious fries and their baby burrgers are the best! if i could i would eat out there everyday
A&W is my favourite fast food resteraunt. Their fries are the best. Their food always has so much flavour and taste.A&W is thee best resturant ever. Besides Coca Cola the next best thing that i like to drink is A&W rootbeer.
I absolutly love A&W. me and the hot chicks are always going there and manage to get free drinks from the waiter guys. its great. all we have to do is walk into the resturant and right away the guys come and serve us free food.
We had an A&W for years here in Huntsville, AL, and then it closed. Several years later A&W opend up (no curbside service though) along w/Long John Silver’s Fish & Chips (uck). The A&W rootbear in a frosted mug is great, but the burgers aren’t the same. They use to have the best slaw in town, now you have to get the slaw from Long John Silver’s which taste like it came from a can. Oh why oh why do things have to change.
I’ve worked at A&W for nearly 6 months now and I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of improvement in the quality of the food.I work in a mall A&W and have recieved complaints from not having frosty mugs to fries being too soggy. I don’t agree with the food being great but I still enjoy the poutine’s once in a while when I get hungry.
