While I’m a confessed scrooge about most things Christmas and I do hate most Christmas music, there is some truly great Christmas music. I share some of it in the seventeenth session of Acts of Volition Radio.
Christmas music that doesn’t suck. Recorded Saturday, December 11, 2004 by Steven Garrity. Run time: 32 min.
Session Seventeen Playlist:
- Crash Test Dummies – The First Noel
- Smashing Pumpkins – Christmastime
- Low – Long Way Around the Sea
- Barenaked Ladies (with Sarah McLauchlan) – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- Wintersleep – We Three Kings

Nice shout-out to your Dad and the “Smashing Pumpkins = Smashing Punk-heads” story. Gold.
No, not all your listeners are Canadian – I’m Swedish, and had never heard the Barenaked Ladies song before. Great choice of songs, as always!
Nice snow on the logo.
Steven,
Have you considered setting up AoV Radio as a PodCast feed?
More info here: http://www.ipodder.org/whatIsPodcasting
Sorry if you already (a) know what it is and/or (b) have already had loads of people suggest the same thing as I just did 🙂
Tobias: Cool! I’m glad your listening.
Alan: I’m glad you could tell it was snow 🙂
Tim: An RSS feed with enclosures (or “podcast”) feed is avaiable.
I really enjoyed these tracks. Thanks. Perfect for those of us who do like Christmas, and try to remember that it’s about Christ.
Hey great idea doing a Christmas session! Great choices in your playlist as well. I was pretty surprised to hear my name mentioned but unfortunately, while I would love to take the credit for that fantastic song, it wasn’t me who recommended the Low christmas music. It was a user named colin_zr that posted right after me 🙁
you think that stuffs good, check out the killer version of Do You Hear What I Hear by Copeland

Steven: Oops, sorry about that.
Diemer: That is a fine mix – thanks for the link.
Obviously the Cocteau Twin’s version of “Frosty the Snowman” just slipped your mind when you compiled this session. 😉
Steven,
Thanks for the info re the enclosures. Sorry for teaching you to suck eggs! I would say that the enclosure-enabledness of the feed is not entirely obvious, though…
I’m listening to song one and look forward to this session. I share your feelings on sucky Christmas music.
Check out Viva Voce’s rockin’ version of God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen, one of coolest modern interpretations of a classic.
Great choice of songs… Thanks for posting this.
Great radio show. This applies to all previous ones as well (even to the ones I have not yet listened). I wish it would come more often. Greetings from Finland!
We were at a friend’s place for Christmas dinner last Sunday and needed some Christmas tunes. So we listened to your Christmas session during dinner (for about 8 times since dinner lasted substantially longer than your session).
The songs were a huge hit! Though it was weird & funny to hear someone say it over and over again that you don’t like Christmas, during a festive gathering.
Listening right now (from Germany, for the record). You have a really nice radio voice, oh and the music is great too. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Can’t wait for the next Radio Session! Happy New Year!
Fantastic stuff! I’m very new to this podcasting lark and it’s quite tricky to find items to suit. Even though we are now well past christmas I just listened to your podcast and thought it was fantastic. Thanks for the heads up on those tracks, and thanks to for the ‘copeland’ track link (that album is on the amazon list for next year).
Enjoy!
Acts of Volition is mentioned in the Feb issue of CPUMag:

I’ve just found your sight – we were looking for any way to get hold of Wintersleep’s “We Three Kings”. I’ll be checking out the rest of your selections – I was completely unaware of “Low” and didn’t know the Pumpkins’ “Christmastime”, but anything that has my wife singing along is a hit 🙂
Yes, we are Canadian – Musquodoboit Harbour, NS. Probably only Canadians would have been searching for Wintersleep 🙂
