Wow. Earlier this week, I posted a draft spec for, Gnome Outliner, a project I hoped to see developed. The response has been remarkable. Only four days later, there is a beggings of implementations in Java, Python, and C. It looks like, as I had hoped, I’m not the only one who would like to have a nice outliner for Gnome.
We have create a project on SourceForge to act as a home for the project. This will provide a bug database, patch tracker, CVS, and mailing list. So, if you are interested, please sign up on the mailing list (gnomeoutliner-devel) and get involved.
Thanks for all the great feedback.
That is a cool open-source story. It will be interesting to see how things turn out. All you have to ask…
I can tell you why this happened… and why it’ll be successful: it’s the first OSS program perhaps ever that was designed top down, from a UI/user perspective. And that’s how good, successful software begins. It was said of the entire original Macintosh team, there wasn’t one guy w/ a typical CS degree, and they pioneered user-friendly. The guys who normally hack code are awesome and indespensible, but people like Steve with a design background are successful because they know how people absorb and use info, and its different from how most programmers do. (don’t get me wrong, there are those who can do both, but there are guys who can play two pro sports, too, they’re equally few and far between).
So, here’s to many more OSS projects started this way! Best of luck all!

Is anyone developing for windows?”
Why would anyone want to develop a Gnome Outliner for windows? Gnome isn’t for Windows…
