Being a first generation Canadian and child of Scots parents, I have watched and been in a room where others have watched Coronation Street since the mid-60's. I have by times been obsessed and bored by it and in the last few years have found it very tedious. I blame the writers. Characters are killed off far to regularly and far too dramatically. It used to be a show that somewhat mimicked lower middle class life in the midlands. Now it is as dangerous to know anyone on "The Street" as it it would have been to know Angella Lansbury in Murder She Whote. In any real Britain, there would be a royal commission on why that location is so deadly. In TV land, the characters go blithly along waiting for the next one among them to be killed. I call it Misery Street.

I agree with Alan. I am British and occasionaly find myself watching Coronation Street, purely out of boredom. If you are American and watch it in the belief that it's a snippet of Brit life, STOP.

It has indeed adopted a more and more ridiculous story line as of late. This, I believe, is to keep up with other the ratings of other soaps. Whereas once we were happy with day-to-day life, we now need bombs and kidnappings. Show me one road in England which has anything at all happen in any one week beyond the humdrum of a speeding car.

What's the point of soaps if we can't believe in what they say????

Those of you trashing Coronation Street have obviously never watched an american soap opera. Evening gowns, tiaras, lame attempts to look introspective and thoughtful that end up with the actor looking like they have just detected the lingering odor of a fart. Oh, and everyone is the CEO of their own cosmetic company. Give me Coronation any day!

Ok, just because this thread has been revived over the past month... I *love* the Street! I thought it was going to be about tea drinking old ladies, but it rawks so much. And I agree with Christine - it's much more believable than the American soaps. I mean, I know it's not reality tv or anything, but at least it's not all glitz and glamour. The only thing that bugs me sometimes is Ashley's voice. Gnah, it's a little too nasal. I hear there's a couple of big events coming up on the show. ;D

I thought Ashley's voice was copied after Beckham's.

i would like to say that how pleased that i am that charlie lawson is coming back to coronation street.

i would like to say that the storyline about Martin and Katy is brillant and its good that the writers are showing that it is realistic that an older man and younger girl can fall in love. As i know from experience and these things do happen in life.

THE LIGHTHEARTED DAILY ROUTINE WAS AN ENJOYMENT, OF COURSE WITH THE ODD MINOR PROBLEM TO KEEP THE VIEWER INTERESTED...BUT THE MODERN TREND TO INCLUDE HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOTHING LESS THAN A WEAKENING SEAM IN THE HULL OF THE OLD "CORRIE" SHIP THAT WILL SINK HER SURELY. BRING BACK THE FAMILY RATED STORYLINE AND MEND THE SEAM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE....AW...THE DAY'S OF ALBERT TETLOC, ENA SHARPELS, HILDA & FRED OGDEN...WHERE HAVE THEY GONE?

My sister watches Coronation Street. Myself, I don't really get it. (Jack: The inclusion of homosexuality in the media and the arts is not "modern," it predates Jebus. In any case, the awfully ugly and perpetually petulant cast of CS are probably not going to brainwash good family-oriented folk into becoming rampaging open-minded liberals. Spongebob Squarepants has that covered:

Sponge Bob is NOT gay!

If its a choice between eastenders and coronation street, coronation street wins big time. there is no screaming and shouting and people actually laugh and make the viewer laugh aswel. I have watched three episodes of eastenders and each time, though it was months apart, it sounded exactly the same as the last time I watched it. The rest of my family watch it, why, I will never know but they are banished from the living room where I hear the muffled screams and shouts through the floorboard. Coronation street is a fun half hour and it should be on every night.

I'm from Winnipeg Canada and a big fan of the show! My latest obsession has been the twisted love triangle between Dev, Sunita and Maniac Mya.

For someone who is supposedly on the side of law and order, the girl has some serious issues with the concept of right and wrong.

Hint: Mya, it's WRONG to set up your EX-fiance's girlfriend just because you can't cope.

To the actors who play Dev, Sunita and Mya.....TOP NOTCH WORK, people! "Mya", you're likely to get a lot of hate mail from this side of the ocean until your storyline's over. Take it as a compliment.

To everyone who works so hard to make Corrie a hit, BRAVO!!! And I am unanimous in that!

From Niagara Falls, Canada, Corrie may not be realistic in the strictest sense of the word but who really cares? It certainly is the closest that I can think of, and damn it all anyway, where can you get this effortless brand of comedy??? Eh???

I remember being a young girl in Ontario, Canada who would groan at the sounds of the Coronation theme song, and would cringe at the sight of the cat walking along the rooftops...but then one Sunday about 6 years ago, I began watching this interesting show called "Coronation Street" before I got ready for work.

The first episode I watched was when Toya got attacked behind the Rovers. I've been hooked ever since! What other show in North America can you watch where people where the same jacket EVERY DAY (like Tracey Barlow and her lovely jean jacket), or where patrons can ask for "only 1/2 pint this morning Betty" (Ken B.) Even my boyfriend, a financial planner, got into the show during the evil incarnation of Richard Hillman. And who didn't tear up just a bit when Sara and Todd lost their baby...c'mon! Now the sound of the musical introduction occasionally gives me goose bumps when I hear it, and even though the cat on the roof has changed, it is my favourite part :)
