Acts of Volition Radio: Session 22

Acts of Volition Radio: Session Twenty Two

This, the 22nd session of Acts of Volition Radio, was recorded the the safe-harbour of my office on a Saturday night. Meanwhile, back at my house (from which I was temporarily banished), my bride-to-be and her friends celebrated the waning days of her life as a single woman. The songs don’t really have anything to do that, but I thought I’d give you some context.

  1. Mew! No way! I always wondered why these guys weren’t more popular in the US. Their album “Frengers” is largely remakes of songs from their first two albums, a very strange thing to do, IMHO, since few of the remakes were really improvements or indeed much different from the originals. “Am I Wry? No” is one that’s actually at least as good as the original. Mew’s playing is so strong, it’s astounding that they were doing this stuff at like age 18 or 19. Should see a new one from them this year, according to their site.

  2. I was actually going to use “Am I Wry? No” on my next mix if we ever did another Rock and Roll Education experiment.

  3. I’m a relatively new listener of Acts of Volition Radio (just started when it went on iTunes), and was just thinking what a perfect candidate AoVR would be for iTunes’ new “enhanced podcast” format. Of course, it would take another crapload of work on top of the effort needed to just put this out regularly, so it’s not something I would expect of anything other than the big production podcasts.

Anyways, this is an awesome program, so rock on!

  4. Greetings from an off-ilsand rukavina…have a great wedding hope everything goes well….

  5. Whoa, thanks for this. I had never heard of Mew, these guys are awesome.

And if you need ideas on what to play next time, how about some World Leader Pretend? Listen to “Bang Theory” if you haven’t already…

PS. I agree with Jason, this session took me half a day to download through iTunes.

  6. Van Diemen’s Land is #2 on Rattle and Hum, not Joshua Tree. I know that’s easily confused though, considering R+H is heavily JT tour stuff.

  7. just checked out the show, and really enjoyed mew, they definitely have some math rock stuff going on. being the math nerd that i am, it’s sexy to hear music with tight, almost mathematical rhythms.

  8. I need some Hortons Choice played. Cause i’m sick of this atmosphere so let’s get out of here. Classic stuff that should not be forgotten.
