Hey New York, Thanks for the smog!

From all in Atlantic Canada, to all in the Eastern US: Thanks for the smog.

Today, in our small capital city of Charlottetown (population approx. 35,000), we have an “Air Quality and Health Advisory”. Apparently, a hot, humid air mass has moved in from the northeastern U.S. and brought with it smog.

This map shows our approximate location relative to the eastern United States. You’d think we’d be safe up here. Apparently smog isn’t just a problem for large cities.

  1. That smog is probably actually from the industry around the great lakes. It’s the same air mass and heat that was enjoyed early this week in Toronto and moved east past me in Kingston. The Toronto newscasts always blame the smog on the US. I’m sure they contribute, but so do Canadian cars and industry.

  2. As long as it’s not SARS carrying pollution.

Poor Toronto, Canada (rural specifically) loves to make its might the butt of our jokes. Everytime a disaster hits we’re ready for a comedy pile on.

  3. i’m thankful there’s a nice ocean breeze in vancouver most days, because when it’s not there the smog settles here too and makes the air kind of gross.

  4. nathan, good point. It’s also not just the citizens of these areas, but those of us buying the products.

  5. Hey Charlottetown, Thanks for Nothing!

At least we’re giving you something… we get nothing in return.

Also, congratulations on being in the middle of nowhere.

Oh shit, sorry about that, Steven. Let me take care of this right now …

… how’s that? Better? Turns out somebody left a window open.

(Seriously, sorry. Rust-belt smokestacks have been dumping coal ash and worse on we New Yorkers every day for decades, so we’re sympatico.)

  7. Yeah, actually not so much NYC as Ohio and the rust belt. Those of us in the New England region (and NYState) have enjoyed this for many years. Also, in reverse, often when forrest fires are raging in Quebec, it’s been smoky here in Boston. I was impressed by that.

  8. I understand a fantastic percent of the crap involved in smog and air pollution generally is the crappy little lawn mower that has 1890’s technology, blessing us all with the blue haze. Plus the coal fired electric generation facilitites of North America. Spark the neutron!
